Ship of Fools Awards

Your host for the online ceremony for the Ship of Fools Awards for 1999 is Steve Tomkins, the evil genius behind the awards, and one of our contributing editors.

We are proud to announce...

... the winners (a.k.a. 'losers') of annual awards for 1999, as we celebrate those areas of church life least likely to be greeted by a burst of the Hallelujah Chorus. Each of the elect will shortly receive a coveted SOF Award Certificate to display as they choose.

Even at the nominations stage of the Awards process, the contenders were decided by our readers. And in the ballot proper, almost 4000 votes were cast. This means that the result genuinely reflects the sanctified disapproval of shipmates worldwide. All of which is a heartwarming demonstration of how the Internet can bring together people from across the world to put aside their differences and agree upon what smells worst in the church. Thank you for taking part. And please keep your eyes open for next year's contenders for the Awards.

Just one miraculous month ...

... is all it took to see these Awards through from conception to delivery, the divine inspiration being vouchsafed to us on 1st March. In the rush, several promising categories failed (like Noah's dinosaurs) to make it on board in time. The 'Bumper Sticker Most Likely to Cause Road Rage' will have to wait for next year. So will 'Most Unreliable Divine Pronouncement of the Year', which must be a bitter disappointment to Jerry Falwell, who became the front-runner for outing Tinky Winky.

But enough! Without further ado, we are proud to announce the winners of the Ship of Fools Awards for 1999...
