Ship of Fools Awards

8. "In Yer Face" Church Signboard Award

Winner: 'Godstilla force to be reckoned with'

This award is drawn from the Ship of Fools Signs & Blunders section, where readers can report their favourite sacred signboards. This turned out to be a neck and neck vote, with an agonising choice between an excruciating pun and a straightforward taste problem. In the end, it was another victory for the British film-mimicking industry.

From the 'anything you can do, we can copy it' school of religious communication, this poster was spotted outside New Malden Baptist Church, South London (twinned with Hollywood, California). It polled 40% of the vote.

Runners-up

Our three runners-up, in descending order, are...

'Denver, I love you this much'

It's big, it's bold, it's just a little bit tasteless – and it pulled 38% of the vote. The message is passed on by the impressively named Happy Church, Denver, Colorado.

'For weddings and a funeral'

If it's just
for weddings and a funeral
then

are missing out.

Shown above is the design on a poster straight out of the 'anything you can do, we'll suddenly cotton on six years later' school of communications, this drew 14% of the vote. Still showing outside St John's, Deptford, London.

'Read the book...'

St Mary's, Edge Hill, uses the power of classic poetry to get through to Liverpool commuters. Produced by Alan Godson, the church's vicar and a chaplain to Christians in Sport, it's all his own work. Sadly, it received only 8% of the vote.
